MASTER Contemporary Arts Practice

The Master’s program in Contemporary Arts Practice at the University of the Arts Bern brings students of various productive arts together. It is a transdisciplinary platform that gives creators in Fine arts (http://www.hkb.bfh.ch/schwerpunktecap.html?&L=2), Music and Media Art (http://www.hkb.bfh.ch/schwerpunktecap.html?&L=2 and http://www.medien-kunst.ch) Creative Writing (http://www.hkb.bfh.ch/schwerpunktecap.html) and Performance (http://www.hkb.bfh.ch/schwerpunktecap.html) the space to work artistically without external specifications, and to present their works publicly. The objective is to develop mature, independent work. This form makes it unique in Europe.

The degree course is strongly individualized and focuses on personal practice. It places authorship centre stage – in an open form, which is continually redefined in practice and theory. Students are supported by mentors and experience intensive exchange with each other. The proximity of artists active in various art forms makes new approaches available, opens up diverse fields of activity, and changes the students’ attitude towards their own discipline. Close ties to the future area of activity establish necessary professional contacts.

The degree builds on the Bachelor's degree or similar experience in one of the disciplines and focuses on a specialisation in the student’s own area.

The Master of Arts in Contemporary Arts Practice is a collaboration with the Master of Fine Arts programme at the Academy of Art and Design Basel (HGK Basel) at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW); and is part of the Master of Fine Arts Network Switzerland.
